Philosophy
Villard Studios was established by Kim
and Philippe Villard in 1986. Originally founded on Cape
Cod, (USA) they produced and sold primarily white-line woodblock
prints a.k.a. Provincetown Prints. Working together on this
obscure method of block printing was attractive to them
from two historic perspectives: The attempt by Gauguin and
Van Gogh to collaborate as painters was a curiosity to Kim
and Philippe prior to their meeting and an early point of
conversation. This along with their interest in the capes’
local history and their introduction to Provincetown prints
(an American method of woodblock printing) the couple decided
to try producing artwork together.
The idea of inspiration, being singular, is easy to appreciate,
yet if inspiration’s volume could be turned up could
this be done by two or more artist joining visions and producing
singular pieces of art? The idea was the beginning of Villard
Studios; artists working and producing art together. The
white-line woodblock print is still their primary expression,
as they diversify into other mediums with other artists.
The collective style is of its own, unique to the many hands
and joined inspiration. Leaving the egos at the door, it
is an experiment of producing from the id while operating
with the right side of the brain. Time will tell if “artists
without borders” can break through and ease the human
experience, for themselves and the audience.
